Working with Network Zone Analytics

Introduction

Note: NZ analytics contains data from each CSU’s IZ analytics except user data.

  1. Introduction to the Network Zone (from Ex Libris documentation) This link will take you to an external website in a new tab. - This is not related to analytics but NZ analytics is a part of the Network Zone.
  2. Network Zone Analytics This link will open a PDF file from an external website in a new tab. - presentation by Nikki Demoville, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, presented at SUNYLA Midwinter Virtual Conference in Feburary 2019. (Keep in mind that this presentation was in 2019 so some technical details might not be accurate any more but this presentation gives a great introduction to NZ Analytics)

Accessing NZ Analytics

You need to login to the NZ Alma to access NZ analytics. Currently, a username and a password must be created for you and you can use the login to the NZ Alma. Contact Christina Hennessey at the CO to get a login and the URL to the NZ Alma for our consortium.

Data in NZ Analytics

NZ analytics contains data from each CSU’s IZ analytics except user data. An example use of this data in NZ analytics is shown in the How to obtain the number of physical items held by institutions within the consortium by LC classification.docx This link will take you to an external website in a new tab. listed above.

Another example is a report listing e-resources managed in your own institution’s IZ. To create such a report in NZ analytics, filter as shown below:

Picture

("Institution"."Institution Name" is equal to your institution’s name)

Alternatively, you can filter using another field:

Picture

("Institution"."Institution Code" is equal to your institution’s code)

For a list of official institution names and codes, refer to Campus Names and Codes | Unified Library Management System Guide.

NZ analytics also contains the data on NZ managed electronic resources. A report that lists all electronic resources for your institution includes e-resources that are managed in the NZ and managed in your institution's IZ. Such a report can be created in the NZ analytics and the IZ analytics.

From NZ analytics, to get a list of e-resources managed in the NZ that are available to your university patrons, you need to filter using the "Institution"."Institution Name" field equals to “California State University Network” AND the "Portfolio"."Available For Group Members" contains to your institution’s group member code.

If you need more details on how to create such a report, you can use reports that were created for the ACRL survey as examples. They can be found in: /shared/California State University Network/Reports/ACRL IPEDS Official ULMS folder/Run in the NZ.

Warning: When you are logged in to NZ analytics, do NOT use any fields from the subfolders of or the folder called “Portfolio Details for Consortia Members.”  This folder will be explained further in the next section.

NZ E-resources Data in Analytics

Data pertaining to the NZ managed electronic resources is available in the IZ Analytics in the Portfolio Details for Consortia Members table in the E-Inventory subject area This link will take you to an external website in a new tab.. No data from other CSU’s can be accessed in your own institution’s IZ analytics.

Picture

For an example use of this data, refer to the example shown on slides 15-23 in Member institutions accessing electronic resource data from the network zone institution.pptx This link will take you to an external website in a new tab..

When this folder was first introduced, it had a very limited number of fields. Since roughly 2024, Ex libris has been working on adding more fields to the subfolders of this folder. As of 2025, the list of fields available in this folder is still limited, especially under the Bibliographic Details subfolder.

NZ Analytics vs. IZ Analytics

Analytics reports can take longer to run in the NZ analytics than in the IZ analytics. This is because NZ analytics has much more data that includes almost all data from each CSU’s IZ analytics.

As explained in the previous section, the availability of data and fields available in the IZ analytics vs. the slower speed in NZ analytics will be the factors that can determine whether you will run your report in the NZ analytics vs. IZ analytics. For a list of fields available in the IZ analytics for the NZ-managed e-resources, refer to Portfolio Details for Consortia Members folder in the E-Inventory subject area This link will take you to an external website in a new tab..

Examples of reports to run in the NZ:

  • Reports created by the ULMS Assessment & Analytics committee for the ACRL survey that were created specifically to be run in the NZ

  • A report listing the call numbers used at the lending CSU for the ILL items that my institution received

  • A report listing which CSU’s have holdings of particular titles

  • A report for which you’d like to maximize matching of e-books, both IZ and NZ managed available to my institution, based on all ISBN’s, not just ISBN Valid. (Note as of March 2025, the ISBN Valid field is available in IZ analytics but the other ISBN fields are not.)

  • A report of NZ managed e-resources available for my institution that needs to be filtered by any field not available in the IZ analytics. As of March 2025, fields such as Resource Type, full ISBN, Publication Year and many fields in the Bibliographic Details table are not available.
